How to get CyanogenMod 12 on the Nexus 7 2013 WiFi (Flo)

You might be wondering, “These guys have run out of ROMs to write so they’re writing about ROMs on Nexus devices!!” Well, while I’ll not debate that point way too much 😛 , there’s another reason for choosing to highlight CM 12 for the Flo. The fact of the matter is Lollipop on the older nexus devices have been a mess and even the hard core nexus fanboi will agree that the performance has been less than that of Kitkat. While Memory Leaks have plagued the Google builds, CyanogenMod 12 has been able to plug most of these issues while being able to incorporate some useful features as well. So let’s take a look at them shall we?

Pre requisites

  • You must have the latest bootloader installed. To install the latest Lollipop bootloader push it through Fastboot.
  • You must have a custom recovery installed, like latest TWRP or CWM. Latest TWRP installations can be found from here.
  • Your tablet should be charged over 80%.
  • Some common sense and ability to follow instructions!!

  • Download the latest nightly from here.
  • Download the GAPPs from here or here.

With that done, let’s get this show on the road.

Step 1

Boot into recovery mode. To do so, power off your tablet. Press and hold Volume Down and Power, all at the same time. Release the buttons only when the Fastboot / Bootloader Mode menu appears. Use one of the Volume buttons to change the START text to Recovery Mode. When Recovery Mode option is listed in the above part of the Fastboot Mode menu you can press Power. The custom TWRP / CWM Recovery menu should now appear.

Step 2

Backup your current ROM from your custom recovery.

Step 3

Do a complete wipe, data and cache.(includes Dalvik Cache)

Step 4

Navigate to your SD Card and select the ROM zip file. Flash the ROM. (For your convenience we advise that you keep the zip file at the root of your SD card)

Step 5

If you’re so inclined, flash the GAPPs package by navigating to the SD card and choosing the GAPPs zip.

Step 6

Reboot. The first boot will take longer than others so don’t worry.

Root : From CM 12 root permissions can be enable by going into settings>developer settings.

Bugs and Possible fixes

This is a custom ROM so bugs and features may appear in further nightly builds. if you’re the sort to dirty flash updates of nightlies, then please remember to take a backup before you do so. Questions or comments? Leave them in the comment box below.
